What is the takeaway scam?
Dean was back in the LBC studios again this week talking to Ian Payne on LBC’s Consumer Hour show where Dean was asked about consumer problems especially when it comes to scams.
This week’s talking point involved a scam which Dean calls ‘the takeaway scam’, a scam Dean was made aware of by listeners of a previous LBC show.
What is the takeaway scam?
“All four [LBC listeners] had ordered a takeaway from different places but in the same area,” Dean explains.
“Within 10 minutes of the food arriving, they all had a knock at the door with the person saying, ‘you’ve just received your takeaway, but unfortunately, my colleague didn’t take enough money so you owe us some more money.'”
“The amount of money asked for, ranged from £9.50 to £11.25,” Dean added. “They used figures which were not round figures so it sounded more genuine and it worked for the scammers because all four handed over the money.”
July is ‘Scams Awareness’ month and Dean has been urging the public to share their scam experiences, like the one mentioned by Dean in this article, to help raise awareness so that other people don’t get sucked in.
“Fraud/scams can come from anywhere, your phone, email or even at your front door,” he says.
“The only way we are going to stop scams is by highlighting them and telling the world about fraudsters and what they are doing.”
